The European Union comdemns murders and threats to the media
On behalf of the EU Missions in Kathmandu and of Norway, the local Presidency of the European Union expresses its deepest concern over the murder in quick succession of two media entrepreneurs in Kathmandu and Janakpur. We call on the authorities to conduct a prompt and thorough investigation into these deaths, to identify those responsible and bring them to justice. We are also deeply disturbed by reported threats against journalist in Kathmandu, Janakpur and throughout the country.
The Government must give a strong message that there will be no impunity for attacks against freedom of expression and independent media, nor for any other serious crimes.
The Heads of Missions call on all sectors of Nepali society to respect freedom of opinion and the rights of journalists. Press freedom is one of the most important components of democracy, and continuing attempts to intimidate the independent media signal a very disturbing trend that must be stopped.
The Heads of Missions believe it is necessary to strengthen the protection and independence of media persons. The incidents of violence media persons, which have increased recently, are a gross violation of human rights and of democratic norms. We urge the Government, who has the responsibility to impose the rule of law, to take urgent action.
