Speech (in French) given by HE Mr Yves Carmona, Ambassador of France, at the occasion

Translation of the speech
Ladies and gentlemen, dear friends,

We are here today to celebrate the decoration of our friend Mr Ang Norbu Sherpa, on whom I will confer the insignia of the Knight of the Legion of Honour shortly. Let me remind you that Ang Norbu Sherpa has also been honoured with the Medal of Honour (silver) of the French Foreign Ministry for his courageous services rendered to France.

Ang Norbu, you were born in 1967 in Namche Bazaar, the Mecca of mountaineering and trekking.

You’ve done all sorts of jobs: porter, cook, high altitude worker, guide, Sirdar, and international instructor.

In 1992, you established "Adventure 6000” trekking company that organizes trips to Nepal, Bhutan, Ladakh and Sikkim for international clients, particularly French. You have frequently visited my country where you have climbed Mont Blanc 22 times and other Alpine peaks as well.

In France, you have undertaken many training on mountain rescue, mountain medicine and advanced guide. More recently, you have also turned towards skiing in India, Switzerland and France.

Not content with being an accomplished athlete, you have been a man of great courage in dramatic circumstances.

During the earthquake of April 25, 2015, in which nearly 9,000 lost their lives in Nepal, including 10 French, you spontaneously devoted your time, your energy, and your commitment to help the survivors.

This exceptional mobilization on your part has benefited our fellow tourists and Nepali during extremely challenging times.

You saved, at your own risk, the lives of many of our compatriots. You chartered helicopters to search for the missing French, alive or dead, in extreme conditions - bad weather, numerous and violent aftershocks, landslides and rock fall.

You also did several trips to bring aid, food and tents to the villages in the valley of Langtang Valley, which saw a deadly and a historic avalanche, and to the villagers who helped search for the bodies of our compatriots.

Clairvoyant because of your experience, you were able to make the right decisions at the right time for the benefit of France and Nepal.

Mr. Ang Norbu Sherpa, on behalf of President of the French Republic and under the powers conferred to us, we make you an officer of the Legion of Honour.
