Everest Marathon: Antoine Bonfils, 1st foreigner
The Everest Marathon «Tenzing Hillary» has been launched in 2003 to salute the 50th anniversary of the first conquest of the Roof of the World (8,848 m. high) on the 29th of May 1953 by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. The race starts at 5,400 m. at the foot of Khumbu glacier and ends after 42 km. at Namche Bazaar, a trekking base camp located at 3,446 m. high. This year, 136 sportsmen have been part of the Marathon, including 53 foreigners. In this category, the Frenchman Antoine Bonfils won the race in 4 hours, 51 minutes and 10 seconds.
