Déclaration de la Présidence de l’U.E. (21 avril 2006)

THE EUROPEAN UNION, WITH THE WHOLE OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY, HAS BEEN FOLLOWING WITH MOUNTING CONCERN THE DETERIORATION OF THE SITUATION IN NEPAL. THE USE OF LIVE AMMUNITION AGAINST DEMONSTRATORS MARKS A WATERSHED IN THE CRISIS. THE PRESIDENCY OF THE EU ROUNDLY CONDEMNS THE USE OF THESE AND OTHER EXCESSIVE MEASURES BY GOVERNMENT FORCES TO CURB PRO-DEMOCRACY PROTESTS IN KATHMANDU AND ELSEWHERE IN NEPAL.

THE VERY LONG CURFEW IMPOSED IN NEPAL HAS AGGRAVATED THE ALREADY DIFFICULT LIVES OF ORDINARY CITIZENS. THE REFUSAL TO ISSUE CURFEW PASSES HAS HINDERED MANY LEGITIMATE ACTIVITIES. THE EU PRESIDENCY CALLS UPON THE GOVERNMENT TO ISSUE PASSES WITHOUT DELAY TO AMBULANCE CREWS, OBSERVERS OF THE OFFICE OF THE UN HIGH COMMISSIONER OF HUMAN RIGHTS AS WELL AS REPRESENTATIVES OF THE DIPLOMATIC CORPS, IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE VIENNA CONVENTION ON DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS.

THE PRESIDENCY OF THE EUROPEAN UNION ALSO CALLS UPON THE NEPALESE AUTHORITIES TO RESPECT THE RIGHT OF FREE MEDIA TO PERFORM THEIR DUTIES.
