25 April 2017:
The Ambassador of France, Mr Yves Carmona, was invited to the opening ceremony of the seminar, "Workshop on 2015 Gorkha Earthquake: Lesson Learned from 2015 Gorkha earthquake and evaluations of seismic hazard in Nepal". He recalled the emotion that had aroused throughout the world and especially in France and that France had quickly sent specialized aid. "Two years later, the courage and resistance of the Nepalese people are still admired", said the Ambassador.
Ambassador also talked about the Franco-Nepali cooperation in the geological and seismic field that has been intense since several decades. "There is a French technician, sent by the CEA (French Atomic Energy Commission), permanently in the Department of Mines and Geology here. He contributes to the maintenance and updating of the network of seismic sensors installed by France throughout Nepal, the data of which were analyzed within the CEA laboratory", said the Ambassador.
Ambassador said "The great sympathy of the French people for Nepal led to a strong mobilization and contributed to the many existing and newly created NGOs. Even today, this effort has greatly contributed to the reconstruction effort in Nepal, notably in the schools."
Ambassador wished good luck and hoped that Nepal would overcome the damage caused by the disaster by rebuilding better buildings ("build back better") soon.
