25th Anniversary of the seismic network in Nepal

On the 28th and 29th of November 2006, The National Seismological Center, Department of Mines and Geology, Nepal and the Département d’Analyse Surveillance de l’Environnement, France, jointly organised an international workshop on Seismology, Seismotectonics and Seismic Hazard at the Shanker Hotel for the 25 years of the establishment of the seismic network in Nepal.

More than 80 participants took part in the six technical sessions. Well known scientists from France, United States of America, Nepal, India, China, Japan, Germany, and Pakistan presented their research papers on seismology and seismotectonics during these sessions.

Five keynote papers were presented:
-  “An Overview of Department of Mines and Geology/ National Seismological Center and its contribution in Geosciences and Seismological Research in Nepal Himalaya" by:Mr. K.P. Kaphle, superintending geologist and Mr. Som N. Sapkota, chiel of the National Seismological Center.
-  "Earthquake and Crustal Structure of the Himalaya from the Himalayan Nepal Tibet Experiment (HIMNT)" by Dr. Anne Sheehan, Professor at the University of Colorado, USA.
-  "Earthquakes, Geodetic and Geological Deformation in the Nepal Himalaya" by Dr. J.P. Avouac, Professor at CALTECH, USA..
-  "Seasonal modulation of Seismicity and Transient Seismic events along the Main Himalayan Thrust" by Mr. Laurent Bollinger from DASE, France.
-  "Project Hi_CLIMB and the structure of the Himalaya - Tibet collision zone: Summary of a collaborative project " by Mr. John Nabelek from Oregon State University, USA.

The inaugural program started on the 28th November 2006 at the Hotel Shanker under the chairmanship of Mr. B.B. Thapa, secretary of the ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies. Honourable Dr. Ram Sharan Mahat, Minister of Finance, was the chief guest of the inaugural session.

Formal inauguration session was started with the welcome speech of the Director General of Department of Mines and Geology, Mr. N.R. Sthapit. Mr. K.P. Kaphle, convener of the workshop, highlighted briefly the program.

Following his speech, His Excellency Mr. Michel Jolivet, the Ambassador of France to Nepal, Mr. Thierry Heritier from DASE, France, and Dr. Jean-Philippe Avouac from CALTECH, USA, delivered their speech highlighting the different aspects of the collaboration and assured for the continuation of this excellent collaboration.

Then, the chief guest, Honourable Dr. Ram Sharan Mahat, Minister of Finance, inaugurated the workshop by lightening the traditional lamp.

Two great researchers, Mr. M.R. Pandey from Nepal and Mr. Thierry Heritier from France, were honoured by the Honourable guest Mr. Hridayash Tripathi, Minister of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, for their contribution to bring National Seismological Center into its current shape.

Various scientists representing Asia, Europe, and America pointed out the future projects and perspectives. All researchers came with common consensus that research activities should be focused from central Nepal to western and far western Nepal in order to quantify the seismic gap of the Himalaya.
